Learning Rounds- What and Why?

Theory: A Learning Round is a non-judgemental, evidence-based group observation which encourages those taking part to view their practice and approach from a new perspective. As a result, both those observed and those observing develop and deepen their understanding of the importance of including inquiry and reflection into daily practice.

This is a sample of the agenda and different protocols that are standardized to make sure that the learning rounds process is honoured no matter when, who or where the round takes place.

Agenda

8:45 Pre-Observation Discussion – Overview of session, review Problem of Practice, Clarifying questions

9: 05 Teacher will go to class. Group will review protocols for observation and data collection.

9:30 Observation in classroom.

9:50 Group Debriefing – notes become stickees.

10:10 BREAK

10:25 Classroom teach returns to group as a silent witness. Analysis – Share stickees – begin to organize, look for patterns – define and name patterns – create a visual summary of the patterns (if possible).

10:45 Predictions – If I were a student in this class, I would be able to…

11:05 Next Level of Work: Collaborate and choose one pattern area to focus on. Begin to brainstorm and discuss what could come next – tomorrow, next week, next month, next year.

11:55 Last Word –to teacher

12:00 LUNCH – team members are free to go
